How to make a Skyscrapers puzzle

  1. 1Pick a difficulty. Choose a grid size from a gentle 4 by 4 up to a 5 by 5. Larger grids have more buildings to place, so the solve takes longer.
  2. 2Generate the puzzle. Press Generate puzzle. You get a fresh grid with the edge clues that count the buildings visible from each side. Every puzzle has exactly one solution.
  3. 3Print the two pages. Press Print / save PDF. You get two pages: the puzzle with its edge clues on page one and the completed grid of heights on page two.

How to solve a skyscrapers puzzle

Each number is a building height. The clues around the edge say how many buildings you can see from that side.

The method

  1. 1Fill each row and column with 1 to N. Every height appears once per row and once per column, like a latin square.
  2. 2Place the giveaways. A clue of 1 means the tallest building is nearest you. A clue of N means the heights climb in order away from you.
  3. 3Count the visible buildings. A taller building hides every shorter one behind it, so a clue counts only the ones that step up.
  4. 4Match both ends of a line. The clues at the two ends of a row or column together pin the arrangement. Work from the most restrictive.
The one rule
Fill the grid with 1 to N once per line, matching every edge count of visible buildings.
What the answer page shows
The solved heights are printed at the back.
How the grades differ
Larger grids and sparser clues need more reasoning.
Good for
Solvers who enjoy a spatial, picture-the-skyline twist on latin squares.

Questions

What is a Skyscrapers puzzle?
Skyscrapers is a Latin-square logic puzzle. Each cell is a building of a height from 1 to the grid size, every row and column holds each height once, and each number around the edge counts how many buildings are visible looking in from that side, since a taller building hides every shorter one behind it.
Is this Skyscrapers generator free?
Yes. Pick a difficulty, generate a puzzle and print the grid plus its answer, with no sign-up and no watermark. It is free for classroom, home and personal use.
Does every puzzle have one solution?
Yes. Every puzzle is generated and checked by the same solver our Publisher Studio uses, so the edge clues fix exactly one arrangement of heights. A puzzle is never ambiguous or unsolvable.
Does it include the answer?
Yes. Every puzzle prints as two pages: the grid of edge clues on page one and the completed grid of heights on page two, so you can check your work.
What size are the pages?
The free tool prints at 8.25 by 11 inches, a popular large-print size. Our Publisher Studio will export the same book at any KDP trim, from 5.06 by 7.81 up to 8.27 by 11.69, as a print-ready 300 DPI interior.
