One solution, proved before it prints
Every board here is solved by the same engine that made it, and kept only if exactly one filling works. That matters most at the top grades, where a puzzle that has two answers reads as a hard one right up to the point it contradicts itself and wastes the half hour you spent on it. The solution prints on the second page.
How to solve a sudoku
Every grid has exactly one answer, and you reach it by logic alone. A well-made sudoku never needs a guess.
The method
- 1Look for the only number that fits. Scan each row, column and box for a square where every other number already appears somewhere it can see. The one number left is the answer for that square.
- 2Pencil in the candidates. In a square with a few numbers still open, note them small in the corner. As you fill its neighbours, cross the used numbers off until one remains.
- 3Work one box at a time. A number appears once in every box. If two of a box rows or columns are already blocked for a number, the third holds it.
- 4Check as you go. No number repeats in any row, column or box. If one does, a recent mark was wrong, so rub it out and try the next deduction.
- The one rule
- Fill the grid so every row, every column and every box holds 1 to 9, each exactly once.
- What the answer page shows
- Every solved grid is printed at the back, so you can check a single square or the whole puzzle.
- How the grades differ
- Easy puzzles solve on single numbers alone. Harder grades ask for candidate marks and longer chains of reasoning, never a guess.
- Good for
- Beginners learning the moves, and regulars who want a graded run from gentle to brutal.
