French ruled paper (Seyes) to print

Seyes ruling is what French schools write on, and it teaches letter height rather than just holding a line. Each 8 mm band carries three light guides 2 mm apart: lower-case letters sit in the bottom one, tall letters reach the top of the band. The vertical lines keep margins and columns straight.

Paper size

One page at the size you choose. The rules are 0.6 pt and mid grey, so they print clearly and sit behind your handwriting. The same engine draws every page of a bound journal in our studio.

How to use Seyes (French ruled) paper

The French school ruling: 8 mm bands, each holding three light guide lines 2 mm apart, with vertical lines down the page.

Step by step

  1. 1Lower-case letters sit in the bottom section. An a, an e or an o fills the 2 mm between the base line and the first guide. That one rule is most of what the ruling teaches.
  2. 2Tall letters reach the top of the band. An l, a b or a capital goes the full 8 mm. A t stops two thirds of the way. The guides mean you can see that rather than judge it.
  3. 3Use the verticals for margins and columns. They are 8 mm apart, so a margin is a whole number of them, and so are the columns of a table or a sum.
Why the guides are so light
They are scaffolding, not lines to write on. Printing them at a third of the weight of the main rules means handwriting sits on top of them instead of fighting them.
Good for
French handwriting practice, cursive, and anyone learning consistent letter height.
