Cross-stitch graph paper to print
A cross-stitch chart is counted, not measured, so the ruling that matters is the heavy line every tenth square. These are 2.5 mm cells in blocks of ten, the convention printed charts use, which means you can find a stitch by counting blocks instead of squares.

How to chart a cross-stitch pattern
Fine squares with a heavier line every tenth, so a chart is counted rather than measured. One square is one stitch.
Step by step
- 1Find the centre first. Stitching starts from the middle of the fabric, so mark the middle of the chart before you draw anything. Working outward from there keeps the design centred whatever the fabric count.
- 2One square, one stitch, one symbol. Give each thread colour a symbol rather than a shade, so the chart still reads when it is photocopied and so two similar colours cannot be confused.
- 3Count in blocks of ten. That is what the heavy lines are for. Counting fifty squares is error-prone; counting five blocks is not.
- The chart is not the size of the finished piece
- How big it comes out depends on the fabric count, not on the paper. A 100 by 100 chart is about 18 cm square on 14-count aida and about 13 cm on 18-count.

- Designing cross-stitch, needlepoint, beadwork and pixel art.
