For beginners Futoshiki

New to Futoshiki? Start small. These 4 by 4 grids make the rules click quickly: each row and column holds every number once, and the open side of a sign always faces the larger number. Each one is proved to solve by logic, so you can always reason your way to the answer.

Larger grids have more cells to fill. Every puzzle solves by logic, with no guessing.

4×4, 0 given numbers. Fill 1 to 4 once per row and column, obeying every greater-than sign.

Two pages: the puzzle and its completed grid. Every puzzle is proved to solve by logic alone, by the same engine as our KDP studio.

How to solve a futoshiki

Fill the grid so each row and column holds every number once, while obeying the signs between squares.

The method

  1. 1Fill each row and column with 1 to N. Like a mini sudoku: every number appears once in each row and once in each column.
  2. 2Read every sign. The open side of a greater-than or less-than sign faces the larger number. Use the signs to rank neighbours.
  3. 3Chase the chains. A run of signs pointing the same way forces an order, and a long enough chain pins every number in the line.
  4. 4Combine signs with the row rule. Where a sign and the "each number once" rule agree, only one number fits. Place it and move on.
The one rule
Every row and column holds 1 to N once, and each square obeys the signs around it.
What the answer page shows
The completed grid is printed at the back.
How the grades differ
Bigger grids with fewer signs need more deduction.
Good for
Sudoku fans who want an extra twist from the inequality signs.
