Once Books
For indie authors

Illustrate your book — consistently, without an illustrator

If you have a manuscript but no illustrator and no five-figure budget, Once Books illustrates the whole book in one art style, with the same characters on every page, exported print-ready.

The problem isn’t generating art — it’s keeping it coherent

Commissioning an illustrator for a picture book costs $2,500–$7,000 for 32 pages and takes months. The usual AI shortcut costs almost nothing and produces books that are visibly incoherent: the protagonist’s hair, outfit, age and art style drift page to page, and it reads as AI slop the moment it’s printed. Once Books exists to give you the cost of the shortcut with the coherence of the commission — here’s how it works.

The control a serious author needs

  • A custom style, frozen. Build your own Style Profile — medium, palette, linework, lighting — probe-render it, then freeze it onto the book so page one and page twenty-four match.
  • A locked cast. Every character carries a Character Sheet and an Identity Sheet re-supplied on each page, so a whole cast stays recognisable — not just the hero.
  • Page-level iteration. Regenerate any single page without touching the rest. Nothing is final until you approve it.
  • Print-ready output. A high-resolution PDF sized for print, ready for a print-on-demand service or a hardcover order — see a finished sample.

If you want a human illustrator’s original interpretation and can afford it, hire one — we’ll say that plainly. Once Books is for the author who otherwise wouldn’t get illustrated at all.

Common questions

Can I use my own manuscript and text?
Yes. You write the story; Once Books illustrates it. You place your own text on each page and generate the artwork to match, scene by scene.
How much control do I have over the art style?
Full control. Beyond the curated styles, you can build a custom Style Profile — tuning medium, palette, linework, lighting and more — and test-render it against a fixed probe before committing. That style is then frozen onto the book so it can’t drift.
Can it keep several characters consistent across the book?
Yes. Each character gets a locked Character Sheet and an Identity Sheet (front, three-quarter, profile and full-body poses), which is re-supplied on every generation — so a cast of characters stays recognisable page to page.
Is the export really print-ready?
Every book exports as a high-resolution, print-ready PDF sized for printing — not a screen-only preview — so you can send it straight to a print-on-demand service or order a hardcover.
Can I regenerate pages I’m not happy with?
Any single page can be regenerated on its own without disturbing the rest of the book. Nothing is final until you approve it, so you can iterate a page as many times as it takes.
