Why AI illustrations usually aren’t print-ready — and how we fix it

A picture that looks crisp on your phone can still be unusable in print. Screens forgive things paper doesn’t — low resolution, no margin for trimming, colours that only exist in light. “Print-ready” is a specific bar, and most AI tools don’t clear it. Here’s what the bar actually is.

Resolution the page can survive

Print needs far more detail per inch than a screen. An image that fills a laptop can look soft or pixelated once it’s a physical page held a foot from a child’s face. Print-ready output has to carry enough resolution for the finished page size, not the preview.

Room to trim

Printed books are cut to size after printing, and the cut is never pixel-perfect. Artwork meant to reach the edge has to extend past it (the bleed) so a slightly off cut doesn’t leave a white sliver. Art generated for a screen has no such margin, so it fails at the trimmer even when it looks perfect on-screen.

Consistency that holds at print size
